What is the SSB Interview Process? – Complete Step-by-Step Guide

🎯 Introduction – Why You Need to Know the SSB Interview Process

When I first started preparing for my own SSB interview, I remember feeling both excited and a little lost. I knew it was a multi-day process but didn’t truly understand what happened on each day or what the assessors looked for. Over the years – and after being recommended four times – I’ve not only experienced the process multiple times but also guided many aspirants through it.

In this blog, I’ll walk you through each stage of the SSB interview process, sharing practical tips you can start applying today.

📅 The 5-Day SSB Interview Process Overview

The SSB interview is usually spread over five days, testing you on different competencies:

  1. Day 1 – Screening Test
  2. Day 2 – Psychology Tests
  3. Days 3 & 4 – GTO Tasks
  4. Day 5 – Conference Round

If you pass the screening on Day 1, you continue with the next stages. Let’s go deeper.

📝 Day 1 – Screening Test

Your journey starts with:

  • Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test – Verbal & non-verbal reasoning questions.
  • Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT) – Write a story based on an image, then discuss it in a group.

Tip: In PPDT, make sure your story has a clear theme and your discussion style shows cooperation, not dominance.

🧠 Day 2 – Psychology Tests

This day focuses on your personality, thought process, and behaviour patterns through:

  • Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) – Write stories based on pictures.
  • Word Association Test (WAT) – Create sentences from given words.
  • Situation Reaction Test (SRT) – Write responses to given situations.
  • Self-Description Test (SDT) – Share how you perceive yourself.

🏃 Days 3 & 4 – GTO Tasks

The Group Testing Officer evaluates your teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills through:

  • Group Discussions
  • Group Planning Exercises
  • Progressive Group Tasks
  • Half Group and Final Group Tasks
  • Individual Obstacles
  • Command Task
  • Lecturette

Tip: It’s not about being the loudest; it’s about contributing meaningfully and helping your group succeed.

🏛 Day 5 – Conference Round

This is the final interaction with the entire board. It’s short but crucial.

You might be asked:

  • How was your stay?
  • Which task did you enjoy most?
  • How do you rate your performance?

Tip: Maintain calm, smile, and answer sincerely.
